People hear a lot about the academics at KIPP NJ. It’s natural given the high levels at which our students are achieving and the fact that our alumni are 3.5 times more likely to graduate from college. But if there was one thing I wish more people knew, it’s how much we love our kids at KIPP NJ. Truly, the teachers and staff here are driven by love. Walk the hallways any day, step outside at dismissal time, come by for a Saturday school, and you can actually feel it.

In Newark, the Newark Enrolls system allows families to apply to and be matched to schools using one application. But I know that making decisions about where to send your kid is still hard work. So I want parents to hear this: In addition to our great academics, one thing to know about KIPP is how much we care about each and every one of our kids.

At community events throughout the city, we’re always hoping to reach families and community members who might not otherwise list KIPP schools on their application because of lack of awareness or even some persistent myths. With one week left before applications are due that is still plenty of time to give some more thought to your school selections and at least have the facts straight.

KIPP NJ schools are part of the free public-school system, and enrollment is open to all students in Newark. To enroll at KIPP schools, students do not have to take admissions tests, and they do not have to pass an exam to gain entry. KIPP schools are open to all students. To quote one of our parents, KIPP faculty share families’ goals for students, recognizing that “our babies are beautiful, brilliant kings and queens and it is our responsibility to be fearless on behalf of our kids, help them unlock their potential and change the world,” regardless of where they’re at academically and emotionally when they first enter our school.

KIPP schools offer special education services. Schools utilize Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), related service providers, and highly qualified staff. KIPP NJ also has self-contained classrooms on some campuses. We are committed to serving every single child who enrolls in our schools.

Our focus on the whole child means KIPP days are longer than other schools. Extended days, in which students are on campus from 7:30 am to 4:15 pm, include both academics and extracurricular activities. Students spend some of that time in the classroom and some of it engaging in activities such as sports, performing arts, visual arts, and college/career guidance. Many of the activities we offer through an extended day afford students and families opportunities they might not otherwise have access to.

As far as getting to and from school, we provide bus tickets for all eligible students, just like all Newark Public Schools.

We’d love to hear from Newark families and are happy to answer any questions you may have. But even more, we’d love to meet you. Call us and set up a visit. Come see for yourself.
